Since its Baroque origins, the double concerto has excited composers and musicians alike as a unique showcase of virtuosity and communicative artistry for two. Explore its evolution, from its roots in Bach, to later applications by Mendelssohn and Chausson.

Unabridged: Beethoven's Piano Trios I
Beethoven composed his Trios for Piano, Violin and Cello in two compositional stages (his Op. 1 series constitued the first pieces he saw fit to publish, while the later Op. 70 pair and Op. 97 were written during his "middle" period, after finishing his Sixth Symphony). Experience all six of these richly varied trios over two nights, both at Reed College. |

Steeped in folk tradition, the lively spirit of Hungarian music has provided classical composers seemingly limitless inspiration. Experience the richness of Hungarian nationalists Kodály and Bartók alongside imaginative, ethnically themed music by Brahms, Ravel and Haydn. Capping the program are Paul Neubauer's own arrangements for viola and gypsy band! |
