Edgar Meyer, double bass


Edgar Meyer, double bassist, is in demand as a performer, composer and recording artist in many contrasting styles of music. His recent classical releases include an album of Bach´s Unaccompanied Suites for Cello, a concerto album with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra featuring Bottesini´s Gran Duo with Joshua Bell, and his own Double Concerto for Bass and Cello with Yo-Yo Ma. A frequent participant at festivals such as Aspen, Caramoor, Chamber Music Northwest, Marlboro, Tanglewood and Santa Fe, he is involved in diverse musical projects including his quartet with Joshua Bell and bluegrass musicians Sam Bush and Mike Marshall, and those with Wynton Marsalis, Béla Fleck, Garth Brooks, Emmylou Harris and the Chieftains. A prolific composer, Mr. Meyer has written major works for the Emerson String Quartet, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and violinist Hilary Hahn. His recording of Appalachia Waltz with Mark O´Connor and Yo-Yo Ma stayed at the top of the charts for 16 weeks, and the later Appalachian Journey won the Grammy Award for Best Classical Crossover Album in March 2000. A winner of numerous awards and competitions, Mr. Meyer became in October 2000 the first bassist to receive the Avery Fisher Prize.
